About Shah Marai

A 22-year veteran of Agence France-Presse, Marai began his career with AFP as a driver in 1996, rising to the position of chief photographer for the agency's bureau in Kabul.

Marai was not only a great photographer, but a kind and generous colleague at AFP. He loved to laugh, and understood the warm, humane side of life in Afghanistan. His work painted a picture of Afghanistan that recognised the country's struggles, but his photographs also took us beyond the war and into the daily lives of Afghan people.

The 41-year-old was killed in a suicide bombing on April 30, 2018.
